The 28-year-old man enjoyed base jumping, where you jump from a building, bridge or mountain with a parachute. He jumped from a rock wall in Hohenems, Austria, on Sunday morning around 8:30 am.
He was able to call the emergency services himself and was taken to a hospital by helicopter. It is currently unclear why the parachute did not open properly. The parachute may have opened only partially or too late.
Second accident
Only on Saturday another jump had gone wrong in the same Hohenems. Two women wearing so-called wingsuits – suits with ‘wings’ between arms and legs – had jumped from a plane at an altitude of 4,000 meters, collided in mid-air and then crashed.
Both women were seriously injured. They are both still in intensive care, but are stable despite multiple fractures, a spokeswoman said.
