Lothar Matthäus takes national coach Julian Nagelsmann to task. He knows from his own experience what the TV expert wants from a national coach.
Germany’s record international player Lothar Matthäus would like DFB coach Julian Nagelsmann to visit the stadium more often. “I’ve seen other national coaches who are in the stadium more often,” said Matthäus in the football talk Sky90. “Julian is not as regular at the stadium on Saturday as perhaps he could be.” You can also watch a game on Friday evenings and Saturdays.
The 65-year-old admitted that the task could be shared among several shoulders within the coaching staff. As the national coach of Bulgaria and Hungary, he still considered it a duty to watch two or three games of his national players live at the weekend.
Matthäus added: “In my opinion, you can be present in the stadium as long as the time allows. Every now and then, as a player, you might wish that you were interested in it and watched the games live and didn’t hear what was happening to you.”
As a player, he “liked it when a Franz Beckenbauer or a Berti Vogts saw me live in the stadium,” said Matthäus. Beckenbauer was team manager of the DFB selection from 1984 to 1990, Vogts coached the team from 1990 to 1998.
Nagelsmann qualified for the 2026 World Cup with the German national team last year. The tournament will take place this summer in the USA, Canada and Mexico. Germany plays in a group with Curaçao, Ivory Coast and Ecuador.
