Seven years after relegation, Fortuna Cologne returns to the 3rd league. The Südstädter won their home game on the penultimate matchday against Sportfreunde Siegen 2-1 and, with a four point lead over pursuers Rot-Weiß Oberhausen, can no longer be pushed out of the top of the table in the Regionalliga West.
“We’ve been on a great path from day one. The team did very well, especially in the first few weeks and months,” said coach Matthias Mink after the final whistle. “It has developed extremely well. The inner life and the understanding between each other was incredibly good. The leading players always took the young players by the hand, everyone worked meticulously in training. I think the promotion is deserved. Especially because of our strength at home. When you see how long we were top of the table, then that is an award for the team.”
