Norwegian Magnus Carlsen, the world’s number 1 in chess, and Yağız Kaan Erdoğmuş, the rising star of Turkish chess, met in the last round of the 2026 TePe Sigeman Chess Tournament.

14-year-old Yağız Kaan, one of the names that left their mark on the prestigious tournament held in Malmö, Sweden, was defeated by his experienced opponent.

For Yağız Kaan, who had the same points with Carlsen before the match, this match was seen as one of the most important classical chess tests of his career. However, world number 1 Carlsen used his experience at critical moments and won the match.

Even though he lost the match, Yağız Kaan Erdoğmuş’s tournament performance was greatly appreciated. The young athlete, who achieved successful results against many top players throughout the tournament, is shown as one of the future world champion candidates both in Türkiye and in the international chess community.
