SC Freiburg is in the Europa League final, but the Bundesliga still misses out on an additional Champions League place.

The Bundesliga will not receive a fifth Champions League starting place via the UEFA coefficient rankings next season. By reaching the final in Spain’s Conference League, Rayo Vallecano brought La Liga to 22,093 points – even in the best case scenario, the Bundesliga only gets 22,071 points.

The deciding factor was the Conference League semi-finals on Thursday. Rayo Vallecano also won the second leg against Racing Strasbourg 1-0, earning 0.312 points for Spain. Strasbourg missed a penalty in stoppage time. If there had been a draw it would have only been 0.187 points – then the duel would only have been decided in the final.

Freiburg won the semi-final second leg of the Europa League against SC Braga 3-1 and reached the final after a 2-1 defeat in the first leg. The Bundesliga received 0.428 points for this. Freiburg will compete for the title in Istanbul on May 20th – but a win would not make up the gap to La Liga.

Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have already secured their Champions League places via the league. RB Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen, VfB Stuttgart and TSG Hoffenheim are still fighting for the two remaining places in the final spurt of the season.

If Freiburg wins the Europa League, the Breisgauer team will secure a place in the premier class. At the same time, the Bundesliga would not have a Conference League participant if Freiburg finished seventh in the league and won the final. If Freiburg comes eighth or ninth – or loses the final – the seventh-place team will play in the Conference League.
