The recognition of the State of Palestine and the “blocking statute” to support Albanese

Sanchez and Albanese – we read on the Moncloa website – agreed on the importance of guaranteeing the fair application of international law and the independence of multilateral institutions. They also addressed the situation in Palestine and the need to immediately end the violence and build lasting peace.

Spain, which formally recognized the State of Palestine in May 2024, asked the European Commission on Wednesday to activate its “blocking statute”. A legal mechanism to prevent compliance with the sanctions imposed by the United States against Albanese and the judges of the International Criminal Court (ICC) for the investigations conducted on Israel.

The “blocking statute” is designed to protect Europeans from the extraterritorial effects of sanctions imposed by third countries.
