BEIJING (dpa-AFX) – Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi amid tensions with the USA. As China’s state news agency Xinhua reported, they exchanged ideas in the capital Beijing. Iranian state media confirmed the meeting.
What the ministers talked about was not initially known. However, the Iran war started by the USA and Israel at the end of February, in which a ceasefire is currently in effect, was likely to have been a central issue. China and Iran are close economic partners; the country is considered, among other things, the largest buyer of Iranian oil. Beijing has repeatedly criticized the US actions against Iran.
Wang and Araghchi met a week before US President Donald Trump’s planned trip to China. Washington has announced the visit, Beijing has not yet confirmed the visit./jon/DP/zb
