It seems completely arbitrary: Today Inside will temporarily move to Curaçao in two weeks. It comes across as a company outing that the TV viewer can also watch. “Why not during the World Cup?”

If you take Today Inside across the border, you would expect it to make some sense, for example by broadcasting during the Football World Cup from one of the host countries: Canada, the United States or Mexico. But the VI trio will leave for World Cup participant Curaçao in two weeks, but a month before the tournament. Huh?

‘The three of us’

It mainly seems like a sunny company party without a clear substantive hook. How is this now? Wilfred Genee explains Today Inside: “The intention was to go with the World Cup, but you (Johan Derksen, ed.) did not want to. Then they decided: we would do it before the World Cup, then Hélène could go there, but she could not go for the entire period.”

And then? “Then I said: ‘Then I would also like to do a part.’ Then René said: ‘I like that too, then I’ll come along too.’ Then René also came along. Then you heard that we were both coming along and you said: ‘Well, then I want to come too’, and then suddenly the three of us were going there after all. That’s how it actually happened!”

Jan Lul

Due to Johan’s initial absence, the Curaçao edition moved to before the World Cup, but now he is still participating. “Well, I’ve actually come to terms with it. Look, I didn’t like it… I liked it, no, I didn’t like it, but anyway…”

“We are the people who earn money here, but you have a lot of people from departments who are on a collective labor agreement wage. From production, the editorial team, the make-up ladies, camera people, sound people. They were all very enthusiastic and they really enjoy it. Then I think: do I have to be Jan Lul blasé not to come along?”

Applause

Despite the strange broadcasting period, Wilfred is still happy with his colleague. “Exactly. A positive man. That’s how we know him! Applause for Johan!”

It does ensure that there is no longer any logic in the Curaçao edition, René van der Gijp agrees in his podcast. “No one knows why we go there. I really don’t know why we are there,” he screams.

Wilfred concludes in RTL Boulevard: “It is a kind of warm-up for the World Cup, because Curacao is also going to the World Cup. We will make our familiar broadcasts there, but there will be a little more air and fun.”
