With a screening, AZ Delta wants to demonstrate the importance of early detection of asthma and other possible lung diseases. Asthma is more common than you think. Dr. Stephanie Dobbelaere, pneumologist AZ Delta: “In Belgium it is estimated that approximately 700,000 people suffer from asthma. That is 6 to 10% of the population. The symptoms of asthma are not always so clear. It involves shortness of breath that does not always present itself, so it is often not always clear to people that it is asthma. One of the most important causes is – exposure to various things such as smoking, particulate matter, certain gases and professional fumes – are one of the most common causes that can induce asthma flare-ups.”
