Nine demonstrators stood with signs saying ‘never again is now’, including activist Frank van der Linde. According to him, he and the others were arrested because they ‘subtly held up the sign’. A police spokesperson previously said that the activists had been asked by officers to go to a place where demonstrations were allowed, but that they refused and were therefore arrested.
The other four detainees are said to have disrupted public order shortly before or during the two minutes of silence. So one person started shouting.
‘There is no threat of disorder’
Lawyer Willem Jebbink is assisting Van der Linde and the other demonstrators. According to him, the police and the mayor ‘on unlawful grounds chose to sweep peaceful demonstrators off Dam Square,’ he told AT5. According to him, there was ‘no threat of disorder’. “Images show the group silently holding up signs at chest height.”
Dam was full
The National Remembrance Day on Dam Square attracted many thousands of people yesterday. According to Mayor Halsema, the evening was ‘dignified and beautiful’.
