Olivia Rodrigo was deeply moved by the fictional relationship between Sex and the City characters Miranda Hobbs and Steve Brady. Speaking to Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, the singer revealed that “several songs” on their upcoming album “You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love” were inspired by the couple.
Rodrigo explained to Fallon that the album’s first single, “Drop Dead,” is about a “really great first date” and represents the “first step” of the work. “The journey definitely has its ups and downs and goes to a lot of different places from here, but this is the first chapter,” she said.
She added: “I knew I wanted this record to be about romantic love in a more positive sense, because my last two were obviously a bit heartbroken and troubled – which they absolutely should be. So I knew I wanted to write kind of love songs, but I also wanted to infuse them with a bit of sadness and longing and melancholy, because all of my favorite love songs have that.”
Cure and Lana Del Rey as role models
As examples, she cited “Love Song” by the Cure and Lana Del Rey’s “Video Games” – two of her favorite love songs, which she described as “so sad.”
Rodrigo confirmed to Fallon that there are “actually several songs inspired by Miranda and Steve.” “It’s my favorite show,” she said. “I think I’ve seen every single episode at least three times. When Miranda and Steve get back together, she cries and says, ‘Steve, whenever something funny happens to me, I just want to tell you.’ I remember seeing that and thinking, ‘Oh my God, I have to write a song about this.'”
Rodrigo also spoke about her upcoming tour, which she announced earlier this week. “I worked so hard on it,” she said of the tour. “I can’t wait to play these songs live.”
Album will be released in June
You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love is out June 12th. The album is her third studio album, following 2023’s “Guts.” So far, Rodrigo has released one single – “Drop Dead” – which she will perform on “Saturday Night Live” this weekend, along with another new track. Rodrigo revealed to Fallon that it has “always been a huge dream of mine” to host and perform on “SNL” at the same time – both of which are on the program on Saturday evening.
