The French Open starts in just under three weeks. Although the tennis stars in the scene are already earning a lot, there are renewed debates about the prize money.
Shortly before the start of the French Open, an old discussion flares up again. Several top tennis stars express clear criticism of the prize money at the tournament in Paris.
The organizers increased the total prize money compared to the previous year by almost ten percent to 61.7 million euros. The individual winner each receives 2.8 million euros, the finalists each receive half. The finals are scheduled for June 6th and 7th.
However, the discussion about the distribution of income is not new. Last year, representatives of the top players had already called for a significant increase in a letter to the four Grand Slam tournaments. In their opinion, their share of sales is too low.
According to the AP, the players’ group explained: “The players’ share of the Roland Garros tournament’s revenue has fallen from 15.5 percent in 2024 to an expected 14.9 percent in 2026.” The professionals also criticized the fact that previous demands had gone unheeded.
The French Tennis Federation (FFT) contradicted when asked and referred to increased payouts. Since 2019, the prize money has increased by around 45 percent. Part of this will specifically benefit players who are eliminated early or who compete in qualifying.
The organizers also stated: “All revenue generated by the tournament will be reinvested in the Roland Garros tournament and in the development of tennis in France and at international level.” In addition, the association recently invested “more than 400 million euros” in the facility’s infrastructure.
Finally, the association emphasized: “Finally, the FFT remains fully committed to a continuous dialogue with all players in global tennis, including direct exchange with individual players.”
