Villarreal FC and coach Marcelino are going their separate ways at the end of the season. As the third-placed team in the Spanish LaLiga announced, the 60-year-old will not be extending his expiring contract. This marks the end of Marcelino’s second term in office after around two and a half years, having already managed the club between January 2013 and August 2016.
“Villarreal CF would like to publicly thank Marcelino and his coaching staff for their professionalism, commitment and work from day one, as well as for their daily commitment and contribution to the sporting development during the seven seasons in which he was at the helm of the team in the two terms (…),” shared Submarinos Amarillos (the Yellow Submarine).
Marcelino is the coach with the most games on the Villarreal sidelines, ahead of Manuel Pellegrini (257 games). The club has once again secured qualification for the Champions League with four match days to go. This season, as second to last in the table, we were already at the end of the league phase. “Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, Marce. Thank you for everything you have given to this club and these fans. We wish you all the best for your future sporting projects,” concludes the FC Villarreal statement.
