Without ever being caught or stopped, a Swiss woman (25) received an unconditional prison sentence of four years for several serious speeding offences. She’s not even eligible for parole.
Switzerland, together with Norway, is a country that takes this kind of behavior very seriously, including on the highways. The Swiss have been imposing heavy fines for speeding violations for years, some of which receive a lot of media attention abroad. In the Netherlands, for example, we are not used to prison sentences for speeding.
A recent ruling in a German-speaking canton in Switzerland was particularly striking. The young driver had a lot of trouble, but she was never picked off the road by the police or filmed by a speed camera.
Woman filmed herself driving too fast
How then could the police determine her actions? The woman, from the canton of Glarus in eastern Switzerland, was taken to court after police accidentally came across her videos, the newspaper reports Tages-Anzeiger.
She had previously filed a lawsuit against her ex-partner and the police gained access to her phone for the investigation in 2024. They then found videos showing her driving along a Swiss highway at 238 km/h in her father’s car, sometimes with one foot out the window.
A total of seven serious speeding violations were recorded. The judge imposed the maximum sentence on her: four years in prison. She was particularly criticized for filming herself at a speed of 238 km/h in a zone with a speed limit of 110 km/h.
‘Toughest punishment ever’
Anyone who exceeds the speed limit by a large margin in Switzerland can automatically lose their driving license for two years. Depending on the canton, a psychological examination is mandatory.
“I think this is the most severe penalty ever imposed for a case of reckless driving,” a Swiss lawyer told the Swiss daily.
