The runner’s cash register is ringing.

Alisa Vainio’s career is on the rise. PASI LEISMA

Alisa Vainio made a lucrative shoe deal after the World Championships in Tokyo, Over write.

The contract brings the Finnish star a six-figure sum of money per year.

Vainio also has a new watch contract and some smaller partners. Of course, money also comes from marathons.

Sixth place in the Paris marathon brought the Lappeenranta native 3,000 euros, but his starting money was five figures.

According to Yle, Vainio “could go to any store on the Champs-Élysée if he wanted to”, but he’s bad at wasting his money.

Great prize pools are paid out in marathon competitions. For a long time, money has separated the world’s best marathon runners from, for example, the World Championships, because there simply aren’t many starts in the year’s competition calendar.

In April, Iltalehti’s athletics expert Arto Bryggare gave a telling description of how the financial structure of the marathon differs from other athletics.

He brought up the legendary Boston Marathon.

– 50,000 runners participate in the event. 100,000 are waiting for it. Participants pay more than $200 to enter. On top of this is the money received from sponsors. We are quickly talking about more than ten million dollars, Bryggare said.

Partly for this reason, the marathon will separate from the World Championships in Athletics as its own world championship event from 2031 onwards.
