With 48 fatal traffic victims, the number in West Flanders decreases slightly, but the number of injured rises to almost 4,000. According to Flemish Member of Parliament Brecht Warnez, who requested the figures, Flanders invests too little in road safety in our province.
Brecht Warnez, Flemish Member of Parliament: “You can only solve this by ensuring that investments are made in road safety, traffic-safe infrastructure, cycle paths, school environments, etc. This means that from Flanders we have to invest extra in West Flanders, and that not all the money has to go to provinces such as Antwerp.”
But it’s all happening far too slowly, says Warnez. Endless procedures postpone necessary work and continue to unnecessarily hinder safety.
Brecht Warnez, Flemish Member of Parliament: “There is often a political will. There is even money very often, but in the end the spade does not get into the ground due to the many studies, procedures, advice and countless appeal procedures that ensure that it all takes far too long.”
