Almost six months after his conviction, Fugees rapper Pras Michel has reported to prison. He turned himself in at a cell complex in Safford, Arizona, to begin his 14-year prison sentence.
“Today is a painful day for Pras, for his family and for everyone who believes in a fair justice system,” a spokesperson for the rapper said. Rolling Stone. According to her, Michel’s legal team is still trying to challenge his sentence. “This chapter is difficult, but it is not his last.”
Michel, 53, was convicted at the end of November for illegally transferring millions of dollars in foreign contributions to Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign. He appealed his sentence. It is not yet known when this will be treated. According to the spokesperson, the appeal is ‘still in the very early stages’.
Michel tried to enjoy his freedom as much as possible in recent weeks. For example, he attended a Kanye West concert and performed with Fugees singer Lauryn Hill.
The Fugees, which consisted of Wyclef Jean in addition to Michel and Hill, had big hits in the 1990s with songs such as Killing me softly, Ready or not and Fu-Gee-La. Later Michel also scored solo with the song Ghetto Superstar.
