As soon as “Lotus” is out, she follows up: The EP “Sugar Girl” will be released on May 8th and points to a new direction.

Little Simz has surprisingly announced new music. Under the title “Sugar Girl”, the EP will be released on May 8th and marks the next creative step after her most recent studio album “Lotus”.

Quick return

The British rapper only released her sixth studio album “Lotus” in June 2025. With “Sugar Girl” new material follows unusually quickly. The EP will be released just a week after the announcement and was teased by the artist herself via her social media channels.

This high number of hits is not atypical for Simz: In addition to her studio albums, she has repeatedly released EPs over the years, which often act as more experimental additions to her larger projects.

New sound direction suggested

A first teaser suggests that “Sugar Girl” could take a different stylistic direction than the sound of “Lotus”. While the album relied heavily on live instrumentation, the new EP seems to be more heavily influenced by digital beats and more stripped-down arrangements.

In this way, Little Simz builds on her ability to switch between different sound worlds without losing her artistic identity. In the past she has moved effortlessly between introspective storytelling, political rap and cross-genre experiments.

Experimentation and intimacy

EPs traditionally play a special role in Little Simz’s work. Projects like “Drop 6” were created under very personal circumstances and offered insights into their creative development outside of major album cycles.

“Sugar Girl” could also fall into this category: a compact, possibly raw insight into the London artist’s current thoughts and sounds. The title itself leaves room for interpretation and could indicate thematic lightness or deliberately placed contrasts.

Whether the EP works as an independent statement or serves as a bridge to the next larger project will become clear at the beginning of May. One thing is certain: standing still is still not an option for Little Simz.
