The medical situation of Mayor Mark Buijs of the municipality of Roosendaal has ‘slightly improved’. The municipality of Roosendaal announced this in a statement. “Further investigations are necessary to determine exactly how serious the injury is and what recovery treatments are necessary and possible,” the statement continues.

Mayor Buijs was seriously injured on Tuesday in a one-vehicle bicycle accident in Scharendijke in Zeeland. He suffered serious head injuries and a number of broken bones. Buijs was urgently transferred to the Erasmus Hospital in Rotterdam.

According to the municipality, the recovery is expected to take a long time. King’s Commissioner Ina Adema will speak to the municipal council shortly about the situation that has arisen. This is necessary to guarantee the continuity of Roosendaal’s administration and to create space and peace for the recovery of mayor Mark Buijs. Temporarily appointing an acting mayor is an option that will be discussed with the municipal council.

Municipality ‘overloaded’ with expressions of support
The municipality has received many expressions of support for the mayor. According to spokesperson Jeroen Steenmeijer, these are ‘very much appreciated’ by the family. “At the same time, the family asks for peace and restraint, so that they can fully focus on Mark’s recovery process and on each other. They hope for understanding and respect for this,” says Steenmeijer.
