The tennis star misses the French Open. An expert explains the extent of Alcaraz’s injury.
Carlos Alcaraz, currently number two in the world, has canceled his participation in the Grand Slam tournament in Paris (May 24th to June 7th). Officially, his team is still withholding details about the injury. One thing is clear: the superstar is suffering from tendonitis – not uncommon in tennis, often caused by overload.
The doctor José Luis Martínez Romero commented on the possible downtime to the Spanish news agency EFE. The specialist in orthopedic surgery and traumatology explained: “If it is acute tenosynovitis, recovery is estimated at four to six weeks. However, if the injury has been present for a long time and has become chronic, we are talking about three to six months.”
In the worst case scenario, this could even be the end of the season for Alcaraz. In addition, an operation would be an option if the injury turns out to be serious. “At the moment it is all speculation. However, if there is no tendon injury and no degeneration, a full, albeit long, recovery is possible,” explained Romero.
One thing is already certain: In addition to the French Open, Alcaraz will also miss the Masters in Rome. He had previously canceled the tournament in Madrid.
This opens up new opportunities for the competition. Alcaraz, along with Jannik Sinner, was considered one of the top favorites in Paris. His absence also increases Alexander Zverev’s chances of winning the first Grand Slam title of his career.
