Head-to-head and Munich rematch
There are now three professional meetings between Zverev and Cobolli. Zverev leads the duel 2:1, the set ratio is currently 5:2 for the German. Zverev won two previous encounters in Halle 2025 and Paris 2025 in two or three (in a Grand Slam) sets, while Cobolli was still clearly at a disadvantage.
The most recent and emotionally important comparison took place two weeks ago at the BMW Open in Munich, where Cobolli achieved a clear 6:3, 6:3 victory against Zverev in the semifinals. On the clay court in Munich, the Italian eliminated the reigning top three player in just under 80 minutes and then moved into the final. The game was a clear statement from Cobolli that he can not only keep up with Zverev, but also use better-timed shots in pressure situations.
19:44
Flavio Cobolli
Cobolli is one of the most interesting newcomers in the upper midfield in 2026. As a natural clay court player, he has a very high win rate, especially on red clay, and has consistently put pressure on top players since 2025. In the last 52 weeks, the Italian has won 73.7 percent of his matches on clay, but remains with just one win in eight duels against top 10 players. In Madrid, Cobolli began his journey as the number 10 seed and fought his way to the quarterfinals over two tight rounds. In the second round he defeated Argentine Camilo Ugo Carabelli in three sets before winning in straight sets against qualifier Adolfo Daniel Vallejo in the third round. In the quarterfinals, Zverev is now facing his most difficult opponent in this tournament so far and a man whose strength and intensity of play are particularly dangerous on clay.
7:36 p.m
Alexander Zverev
Zverev started the 2026 season with a good Grand Slam and also with stable tournament results. At the Australian Open he was again in the semi-finals, lost in a five-sat marathon against Carlos Alcaraz and had to accept a first-round defeat in Acapulco after a somewhat shaky tournament run. In Indian Wells there was a return to strong form, including the semi-finals, before Jannik Sinner clearly triumphed in a duel between two top 3 players. In Madrid, the world number three starts the clay court season very consistently. In the last round he beat seeded Czech Jakub Mensik in a hard-fought three-sat match 6:4, 6:7(4), 6:3. Zverev is considered one of the best clay court players on the tour; his record on the red clay court over the last 52 weeks is an impressive 72 percent victories.
