Tupac’s family files lawsuit. What’s behind it?

Tupac Shakur is considered one of the greatest and most influential hip-hop artists in the history of the genre. He had an eventful career in which his political lyrics, but also his famous feud with Notorious BIG, stood out. His life came to a tragic end when he was murdered in 1996. Even today, the musician’s death still concerns many people – and now the story surrounding him is writing a new chapter in court.

Family files lawsuit

After Tupac Shakur was shot dead on the Las Vegas Strip, the solution to the case remained a mystery until 2023. New conspiracy theories kept emerging, and the investigators responsible were unable to catch a perpetrator for a long time. In 2023, Duane Keith “Keffe D” Davis was finally arrested for the murder and has since been considered the musician’s assassin.

However, the murdered man’s family doesn’t leave it at that. The lawyers of Maurice Shakur, stepbrother of the “Changes” interpreter, filed a wrongful death lawsuit on April 28, 2026. The lawsuit seeks to determine whether other parties were involved in an alleged “complex conspiracy to assassinate Tupac that involved much more than just retaliation for an earlier altercation.”

99 alleged co-conspirators

“Many of those involved are long deceased, while others have been difficult to identify,” the lawsuit states, as Rolling Stone reports. The indictment continues as follows: “One thing is certain: There are still people who were involved in Tupac’s murder and who have not been held accountable for their crimes for 30 years. This lawsuit seeks to change that and seek compensation for Tupac’s wrongful death.”

As a result, 99 possible co-conspirators are named who are said to have been involved in a conspiracy that led to the rapper’s death. The family is therefore sure that not all the names of those involved are known and is looking for them.

Trial begins in August

The trial against Duane Keith “Keffe D” Davis, who has already been arrested, is scheduled to begin in August 2026. He is the first person arrested for Shakur’s assassination. He is charged with murder with the use of a deadly weapon and intent to promote, support or assist a criminal gang. Davis has pleaded not guilty.

It remains to be seen whether the lawsuit can actually lead to a complete clarification of the case. There have been no further statements from Tupac Shakur’s family so far.
