Setback in the relegation battle
As of: April 29, 2026 9:48 p.m
Bitter news for the relegation-threatened Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg: Maximilian Arnold will no longer be able to play for Lower Saxony in the last few games due to an injury.
Arnold, who has been struggling with problems in his groin area for weeks, will no longer be able to take part in the three remaining games of the season on Sunday in Freiburg (7.30 p.m., in the NDR Livecenter), against Bayern Munich and at FC St. Pauli, as the penultimate team announced on Wednesday. The midfielder would also not be available in a possible relegation.
Setback in training
“Max had been making progress at times recently, but without completely reaching the fitness level that he simply needs for his intensive style of play. Unfortunately, he suffered a setback in training on Sunday, so we decided together in consultation with the doctors, also with a view to the new season, that it would be better to take him out completely,” explained VfL coach Dieter Hecking.
“It’s hard for me not to be able to help anymore”
“With the best support from the medical department, I’ve tried everything in the last few days and weeks. But when you realize that it just doesn’t work, then you have to make a decision that hurts,” said Arnold, who came into the game from the bench in the last away game at Union Berlin and celebrated his 400th Bundesliga appearance for the “Wolves”.
“Anyone who knows me knows how hard it is for me to no longer be able to help the team in this difficult phase,” emphasized the 31-year-old and promised: “Despite my rehabilitation program, I will be close to the team in order to continue to support them for our common goal of staying in the league.”
