Sybille tells that in the first episode of the three-part docuseries Delphine: my story which aired Wednesday on One.
Albert, who was king of Belgium from 1993 to 2013, knew that Delphine was his illegitimate daughter, but often came over only as a ‘good friend’. Delphine liked him and didn’t mind hearing that he was her father.
She heard the news at her favorite London restaurant. “She was not surprised or in shock. She must have sensed it”, Sybille looks back. “I loved it,” says Delphine herself. “Not because of who he was. I didn’t care that he was a prince; i loved his character. It would have been easier if he hadn’t been a prince, then I wouldn’t have had to hide.”
Last year, Delphine was officially recognized as the king’s illegitimate daughter. Since then she is also officially princess.
