The “Django Unchained” sequel is coming: Sony has signed screenwriter Brian Helgeland. The sequel will be a Django-Zorro crossover – it will be released in cinemas in 2028 at the earliest.
Quentin Tarantino is a cult figure in Hollywood. 14 years ago, his most successful film to date, “Django Unchained,” was released. In it, Jamie Foxx, as the eponymous title hero and bounty hunter, goes on a campaign of revenge against all of America’s slave drivers in order to save his wife. The Western is considered one of the director’s best capers and is now actually getting an unexpected crossover sequel.
Not the 10th Tarantino film
“The Adventures of Cliff Booth,” the sequel to Quentin Tarantino’s ninth film “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” will soon be released on Netflix. Sony has now reactivated the sequel to “Django Unchained” and is officially planning to do so, as “Deadline” confirmed. The filmmaker flirted with continuing his cult film a few years ago. However, what is now becoming a reality will not be his final tenth film.
What already exists is a seven-part crossover comic by the 63-year-old in collaboration with Matt Wagner. In this Django and the character of Zorro actually meet. The project should be implemented as early as 2022; However, the project was put on hold due to financial concerns. The planned new film is now intended to be a continuation of the comic.
New scriptwriter and story
In fact, a screenwriter has already been found for the film. Sony has hired Brian Helgeland, whose credits include “LA Confidential” and “Mystic River,” for the project. He is now supposed to write a new story in which the former slave continues to do mischief as a bounty hunter and in the process forms an unexpected friendship with Don Diego de la Vega, Zorro’s name.
However, it is not yet known who will take the director’s chair. In any case, it won’t be Quentin Tarantino.
When can a cinema release be expected?
Since the film project is still in the early stages of planning and there is no script yet, a theatrical release is not expected before 2028.
