Replaces own successors

Marvin Friedrich will return to Union Berlin after four and a half years. The 30-year-old central defender, who left the Iron Men for Borussia Mönchengladbach in the winter of 2022, will not receive a new contract with the Fohlen. According to “Sky”, they will be returning to the capital free of charge in the summer.

Friedrich had the best time of his career at Union, playing 141 games (9 goals) and increasing his market value to 10 million euros. The move to Gladbach was actually supposed to be the next step in his career, but instead he couldn’t match his performance there and had to keep fighting for his regular place. This season he only made seven appearances lasting 149 minutes, the fewest in a year since the transfer.
At Union he should now fill the gap that his own successors may leave behind. Diogo Leite and Danilho Doekhi were each signed as replacements for Friedrich in the summer of 2022 and are unlikely to extend their contracts, which are also expiring. For the coming season, only Leopold Querfeld and the loaned talent Oluwaseun Ogbemudia (Waldhof Mannheim) are currently in the Köpenick squad.
