Budu Zivzivadze, Jan Schöppner and Patrick Mainka celebrate 1. FC Heidenheim's victory against FC St. Pauli.

As of: April 27, 2026 • 8:00 a.m

1. FC Heidenheim had already given up the class struggle. But on the supposed farewell tour, hope suddenly arises again.

After the defeat at Werder Bremen, 1. FC Heidenheim was devastated. For captain Patrick Mainka it was “a relatively hopeless situation”. Coach Frank Schmidt considered the performance “not suitable for the Bundesliga”. Also after the success in the basement duel against St. Pauli said the 52-year-old: “It makes no sense to immediately come up with a new direction after a victory.”

Heidenheim suddenly has hope again

Although Heidenheim is currently in last place in the table, it is worth getting out the slide rule again on the Ostalb. Because the gap to the relegation place is only four points. St. Pauli hasn’t won since the end of February. VfL Wolfsburg has only achieved one win since mid-January. And for the season finale, the game plan suits the Heidenheimers. Because on the last matchday, St. Pauli and Wolfsburg take points from each other in a direct duel.

Remaining program: 1. FC Heidenheim

  • SC Freiburg – 1. FC Heidenheim 2:1
  • 1. FC Heidenheim – FC St. Pauli 2:0
  • Bayern Munich – 1. FC Heidenheim, Sat, May 2nd at 3:30 p.m. (A)
  • 1. FC Köln – FC Heidenheim, Sun, May 10th at 5:30 p.m. (A)
  • 1. FC Heidenheim – 1. FSV Mainz 05, Sat, May 16th at 3:30 p.m. (H)

Until then, Wolfsburg will still have to deal with European Cup contenders SC Freiburg and FC Bayern Munich. St. Pauli still has to play against Mainz 05 and against the Champions League contenders RB Leipzig. If 1. FC Heidenheim gains two more points by the last matchday, the dream of staying in the league via relegation would be within reach again.

Heidenheim has to play at FC Bayern Munich

However, that will be difficult enough. Because on the way to a miracle, Mainka, Schmidt and Co. have to clear the highest hurdle imaginable: FC Bayern Munich. “We know where we are playing next week,” said Frank Schmidt after the game against St. Pauli. “But FC Augsburg also managed to win in Munich. And we wouldn’t mind if we could pull off this miracle too.”

However Bayern have already proven that at Mainz 05that even with the “C-Elf” they are hard to beat between two groundbreaking games in the DFB Cup and Champions League. And of course the following applies: If the worst case scenario is a defeat, FCH is out of the window. But miracles happen again and again – and always at 1. FC Heidenheim.
