A stage builder died on Sunday after being injured while setting up an open-air concert by Colombian pop star Shakira in Rio de Janeiro. The 28-year-old man became trapped during construction of the stage, according to the state fire department.
According to local media, he got both legs stuck in a hoisting installation. He was able to be freed and taken to hospital, but died there from his serious injuries.
The 49-year-old Colombian world star will perform in Rio this Saturday. This is a free concert on the famous Copacabana beach, as Madonna and Lady Gaga previously performed in the same place. Last year at Lady Gaga’s event, an estimated 2.5 million people attended.
Shakira said earlier this week that she couldn’t wait for the time to come and was preparing “a lot of surprises.” “Guest appearances, new outfits, songs you want to hear,” she said. “I can’t wait to be there.”
