With a gala performance, Borussia Dortmund stormed into the Champions League for the tenth time in a row. The efficient BVB defeated their favorite opponent SC Freiburg 4-0 (3-0) on Sunday and thus booked their ticket for the premier class on the 31st matchday. With three games left to play, Dortmund can no longer slip to fifth place in the table.
The risk of such a crash in the season finale would have been extremely low anyway, but Maximilian Beier (8th) and Serhou Guirassy (14th) eliminated any last doubts in the early stages. Ramy Bensebaini (32nd) increased before the break, the eighth home win in a row against SC was never in danger. Fábio Silva (87th) made the final score.
For Freiburg, however, it was the next bitter setback within a few days: only on Thursday, coach Julian Schuster’s team failed in the semi-finals of the DFB Cup at VfB Stuttgart. This defeat seemed to still be in Freiburg’s bones, especially at the beginning of the game they couldn’t find a way to beat BVB.
Bensebaini was directly involved in two goals
Dortmund’s first two chances led to goals: Bensebaini hit a long pass into the path of Beier, who was allowed to storm into the penalty area and finish freely. A little later, Guirassy exploited a counterattack. When the game had calmed down a bit, Bensebaini headed in from a corner.
Things didn’t go any further at this rate, but coach Niko Kovac’s team remained in control at all times. When the ball was suddenly in Dortmund’s goal after the break, the BVB professionals were able to quickly breathe a sigh of relief. Freiburg goalscorer Lukas Kübler was offside (55th).
Samuele Inacio made a remarkably good starting eleven debut at BVB. The 18-year-old offensive player showed some promising approaches, was courageous and didn’t let the big crowd in Dortmund unsettle him. In the 73rd minute, Inacio was substituted to loud applause from the fans.
Strong reaction from BVB to recent defeats
In general, BVB showed the appropriate reaction to the recent defeats against Bayer Leverkusen and TSG Hoffenheim. Even with the confident lead behind them, Dortmund didn’t retreat completely, but kept looking for gaps for the next goal.
The next goal is to secure second place in the table behind record champions Bayern Munich. Given the five-point lead over RB Leipzig, which is in third place, the chances are very good.
In the coming season, BVB wants to make a new attempt – in the Bundesliga and also in the premier class. BVB failed there unusually early this season and it was over in the playoffs. But that no longer played a major role on Sunday; instead, Silva continued to extend Dortmund’s lead in the final phase.
