After just around 30 minutes, Dortmund put the lid on the game. Freiburg can no longer come close and has to accept a setback in the European race.

Borussia Dortmund confidently defeated SC Freiburg 4-0 (3-0) on Sunday afternoon. In a strong opening phase, coach Niko Kovač’s team rewarded themselves early with goals from Maximilian Beier (8th), Serhou Guirassy (14th) and Ramy Bensebaini (31st). Freiburg didn’t get back into the game; a goal from Lukas Kübler (55th) was withdrawn due to an offside position. Fábio Silva scored the final point shortly before the end of the game (87th).

For Freiburg it is another setback after the cup exit during the week. Coach Julian Schuster’s team is fighting for seventh place in the table against Eintracht Frankfurt, which entitles them to take part in the Conference League. Due to the bankruptcy and the point of the SGE on Saturday, the Hessians have now passed. Dortmund, on the other hand, has consolidated second place and secured participation in the Champions League next year.

Between the semi-final exit in the DFB Cup at VfB Stuttgart and the semi-final first leg in the Europa League at Sporting Braga, the guests also lacked any bite. All three goals before the break by Beier (8th minute), Guirassy (14th) and Bensebaini (36th) resulted from severe individual defensive errors. Substitute Silva (87th) scored the final score shortly before the end.

Freiburg’s coach Julian Schuster had rotated in seven positions. This had never happened before under his aegis. Johan Manzambi and Matthias Ginter weren’t even in the squad after the intense cup fight in Stuttgart.

Once again the sports club went under in Dortmund. From the last six away games with the Black and Yellows, Freiburg did not manage to score a point, conceding 25 goals. This time too, BVB exploited the sometimes grotesque defensive blunders all too consistently. Derry Scherhant made a mistake when conceding the first goal, so that the nimble winger Beier sprinted past a steep Bensebaini pass without any problems and safely used it.

Just six minutes later, Ifechukwu Ogbus was asleep so that Guirassy was able to tip a well-considered and delicate pass from Julian Brandt into the net. Bensebaini’s header goal from a corner from Julian Ryerson was the early decision. This time Igor Matanović wasn’t paying attention. For Ryerson, it was the ninth corner this season that resulted in a goal – a league record.
