spoiler alert

The makers of Cops Maastricht have a huge surprise in store for viewers in the penultimate episode of the twentieth season. This episode can already be seen on NPO Start and next Friday on NPO 1. This is the first series of the popular police series without Victor Reinier, who played the role of Floris Wolfs for years.

Please note: this article contains spoilers about an episode of Flikken Maastricht that has not yet been broadcast on television. Don’t read any further if you still want to watch.

At the beginning of the season it became clear that Floris Wolfs (Victor Reinier) has died. There are still quite a few loose ends surrounding Eva van Dongen’s long-time partner. It became clear that Wolfs has a son, one blow caused an aneurysm to burst in the police officer’s head. There are also Wolfs’ missing millions and the corrupt detective Richard Steen is still hunting Van Dongen.

This storyline comes to a head just before the season finale. Jeroen Vermeer, played by Eric Corton, is Van Dongen’s new partner and turns out to be not completely clean either. After he has carefully fished for Wolfs’ inheritance a number of times, it becomes increasingly clear that he is corrupt. For example, he places evidence at a crime scene to divert attention.

In the meantime, Van Dongen finds out where Wolfs’ missing millions have gone. A woman whose daughter died in an earlier season turned out to have a good relationship with the police officer. She has been given a USB stick with a numerical code for safekeeping. There appears to be millions worth of bitcoin on it.

Vermeer also visits this woman and tries to find out information. When he discovers that it is a USB stick with a code, he strangles the woman.

Blackmailed

Ultimately it turns out that Vermeer is being blackmailed by Steen, played by Martin Schwab. After killing the woman, Vermeer has pangs of conscience. He is fed up with the constant lying to his partner Van Dongen. When Vermeer confesses all this to Steen, he pulls out a gun. He thus shoots Vermeer dead.

A major plot twist, just before the season finale, precisely because it seemed that Eric Corton had been brought in to replace Victor Reinier in Cops Maastricht. Reinier was fired because of his behavior on set, which made collaboration impossible. Ultimately, it looks like there won’t be a replacement this season.

Van Dongen has now formed a duo with Eindhoven colleague Lars Peeters. Together they hunt for Vermeer and Steen. Peeters is played by Egbert-Jan Weeber. But with one episode to go, it is of course far from certain that he will see the 21st season Cops Maastricht fetches.
