The footballers of 1. FC Nürnberg narrowly lost the Bundesliga relegation duel against Hamburger SV.
In the relegation duel between 1. FC Nürnberg and Hamburger SV on the 23rd matchday of the women’s Bundesliga, everything was at stake, as club captain Luisa Guttenberger made clear before the game. The Nuremberg women wanted to extend their four-point lead over their table neighbors and take an important step towards staying in the league.
Also because a day later the clubs SGS Essen and Carl Zeiss Jena, who are also threatened with relegation, meet. The 23rd matchday could be the preliminary decision in the fight to stay in the league. In addition, the club women wanted to finally get three points again after three defeats in a row at home in the Max Morlock Stadium.
Nuremberg starts well and slows down
It had been several weeks since the last Bundesliga game, but the hosts from Nuremberg still started the game lively and lively. The first shot on goal was taken by Aneta Polaskova, who challenged HSV keeper Lea Paulick with a sharp finish in the second minute.
But after an injury-related substitution by HSV in the 9th minute, the picture changed. The Hamburgers were now better in the game, Melina Krüger in particular had some big moments. First she aimed just over the goal (15th), then she got a header in the six-yard box (26th). But because FCN goalkeeper Lourdes Romero was paying attention, a more violent collision occurred. Frustrated by the referee’s lack of a whistle, she first pushed Romero and then the Nuremberg defender. For this she received a yellow card from Selina Menzel.
HSV leads in the relegation duel
As expected, it was a hotly contested, intense game in which emotions ran high. However, the clubbers seemed a bit disjointed in the following phase, were often outplayed in midfield and had a bit of difficulty clearing the balls consistently in defense. On the offensive, they repeatedly tried to execute quick counterattacks via Nastassja Lein. Paulick was able to parry their shot on goal (45th + 3), but it gave FCN self-confidence shortly before the break.
After the break, the game became more intense and even more competitive. After a foul by Emöke Papai (49th) and her subsequent verbal contradiction, the Nuremberg player also saw a yellow card. The Nuremberg defense continued to have gaps, which Annaleen Böhler coldly took advantage of. After a corner, the Hamburg player headed completely free in the penalty area against the direction of the keeper and into the goal, giving HSV a 1-0 lead (56′).
Nuremberg misses big points
After that, the guests from the north had a little momentum and mostly played in the Nuremberg half. FCN coach Thomas Oostendorp reacted by substituting Meret Günster for Polaskova (61′). But the hosts were poor in their build-up play and lost too many balls.
Günster showed a ray of hope in the 77th minute when she finished from the backcourt after an assist from Lein. But her shot was blocked and achieved nothing. Even in crunch time, the home team’s performance was not enough, so the club women missed out on big points in the relegation battle with the 0-1 defeat against Hamburger SV.
