The late professional cyclist Cristian Munoz at a race in 2021

As of: April 24, 2026 • 6:51 p.m

The Colombian professional cyclist Cristian Munoz is dead. The Colombian association announced this on Friday. Top star Tadej Pogacar’s former teammate at Team UAE Emirates-XRG died at the age of 30 as a result of medical complications after a fall.

Munoz crashed at the Tour du Jura last Saturday. The Colombian, who most recently rode for the Nu Colombia team from his home country, suffered a serious knee injury. His condition then deteriorated dramatically – according to media reports, due to sepsis. Even an operation did not significantly improve the situation.

Mourning for professional cyclist Cristian Munoz

“His death leaves a huge void in Colombian cycling and in the hearts of all those who had the privilege of knowing him and spending time with him on the tracks and in competitions”said the association’s press release. “Cristian will be remembered for his dedication, discipline and humanity inside and outside the peloton.”

Munoz team Nu Colombia Asturias tour got out

Munoz’s Nu Colombia team withdrew from the Tour of Asturias, which started on Thursday, due to the shocking news. The remaining drivers honored the deceased with, among other things, a minute’s silence. Munoz, who won a stage in the junior edition of the Giro d’Italia in 2018, joined the UAE team like Pogacar in 2019. After three years he left the team.
