Diogo M., who caused a fatal accident in Milheeze in 2024, will have to spend longer in jail. On appeal, he was sentenced to 5 years in prison and is banned from driving for ten years. According to the public prosecutor, born Portuguese Diogo M wanted to end his life with the crazy ride. During the hearing in 2024, he was already labeled as ‘impulsive and extremely selfish’.
The Public Prosecution Service found that it was manslaughter and demanded an 8-year prison sentence. The court thought differently at the time and gave him one year in prison and took away his driver’s license for three years.
On appeal, the Court of Appeal in ‘s-Hertogenbosch today ruled that Diogo M did deliberately take the life of the victim and was therefore proven to be manslaughter, which meant that the sentence was also much higher.
No goodbye
Relatives said during the court hearing that they found what happened unpalatable: “We were unable to say goodbye, we could only look at a wooden coffin. This is heartbreaking. We hope that the perpetrator realizes that he has completely changed our lives.”
The victim died at the scene of the accident, the Schutsboomsestraat, the main road from Bakel to Milheeze. Diogo M. said he was exhausted that day. He had barely slept because his then girlfriend had said the night before that she wanted to end their relationship. M. wanted to pick up things from the woman’s father on the morning of the tragedy.
170 kilometers per hour
The next morning, Diogo saw his ex’s father driving and he chased him at high speed. But before he could catch up, things went wrong.
Diogo M. drove at 171 kilometers per hour into the back of the car of the 75-year-old man, who was also driving there. Both cars crashed into trees, left the road and burst into flames.
At the time of the collision he must have been traveling at 171 kilometers per hour. The man from Milheeze was then driving about 80 kilometers per hour, the speed limit on the part of the road where he died.
