Marwin Hitz was in action in the top German league for many seasons. Now the goalkeeper has announced an important decision.
Long-time Bundesliga goalkeeper Marwin Hitz is ending his career after the current season. The 38-year-old announced this on Thursday about his current club FC Basel.
“After many incredibly beautiful, instructive, great and sometimes hard years in professional football, I decided to end my active career in the summer,” said Hitz.
Hitz experienced his best phase at FC Augsburg: from 2013 to 2018 he played more than 150 competitive games for FCA. He was in goal seven times in the Champions League – he also played for VfL Wolfsburg and Borussia Dortmund. In total, Hitz made 181 appearances in the top German league. Hitz won the DFB Cup with BVB in 2021. At VfL he was part of the championship squad in the 2008/2009 season, but was not used under coach Felix Magath.
Hitz has been under contract with FC Basel since 2022. At the end of January he announced that he would be leaving the club at the end of the season. At the time, he still left it open as to what would happen next with his career.
