American actor Patrick Muldoon, known from the series “Days of Our Lives” and “Melrose Place” as well as films such as “Starship Troopers”, has died at the age of 57. As Deadline reported, the actor died on Sunday, April 19th, after a heart attack. His manager confirmed the death to Variety.
Muldoon was born on September 27, 1968 in San Pedro, California. After graduating from the University of Southern California in 1991, he landed a role in “Saved by the Bell” – initially for just three episodes. He then joined the popular soap opera Days of Our Lives, where he portrayed the character Austin Reed from 1992 to 1995 and again from September 2011 to July 2012. He played the recurring role of Richard Hart on “Melrose Place” for three seasons in the mid-1990s.
In 1997, Muldoon starred in Paul Verhoeven’s beloved science fiction film “Starship Troopers” alongside Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards and Neil Patrick Harris. He remained active throughout the 1990s and 2000s, appearing in films such as “Born to Ride”, “Spiders 3D” and “Saving Christmas”, as well as numerous television films such as “Deadly Revenge” and “His Secret Past”.
Spiritual view of roles
About his approach to roles, he once said that he doesn’t look at a specific element of a project, but rather asks himself what he can personally take from it.
“I tend to look at things from the back,” he explained in 2012. “When you get a role, there’s something happening in that character. There’s a question that the character is living with at that point in time. There’s probably something there that you have to look at in your own life. When I’m offered something, I look at it a little bit from a spiritual perspective. Whatever obstacle the character has to overcome, somehow I’m asked to look at that in my own life. To play the role, you have to look at it from your own life That’s what I generally look for when a role comes to me.”
Muldoon has served as executive producer on numerous projects including The Tribes of Palos Verdes, Arkansas, Marlowe, The Card Counter, The Dreadful and Riff Raff. He most recently produced “Kockroach,” starring Chris Hemsworth, Taron Egerton and Zazie Beetz, a film that is currently in production.
Singer and producer
In addition to his acting career, Muldoon was the lead singer of the band The Sleeping Masses, which he founded with Neil Ives. The group’s 2009 track “The Woman Is the Way” was featured in the film “Powder Blue” and on the MTV series “The Hills.”
Muldoon’s latest film, the crime thriller “Dirty Hands,” co-starring Denise Richards and Michael Beach, is scheduled for release on April 24th.
