Cruise ships stranded in the Persian Gulf by the Iran War have successfully crossed the Strait of Hormuz and are on their way to Europe.
These include “Mein Schiff 4” and “Mein Schiff 5” from TUI Cruises and the “MSC Euribia” from the Swiss company MSC.
The ships sailed in a convoy through the strait off Iran on Saturday, an MSC spokesman said. “The passage took place in close coordination with the responsible authorities,” it said.
The TUI ships are on their way to the Mediterranean, the company announced in Hamburg. The shipping company wants to provide further details about the route and schedule as soon as they are reliably determined. According to its company, the “MSC Euribia” is heading to Northern Europe. The “Euribia” cruise from Kiel on May 16th will take place as planned.
Strait of Hormuz supposedly closed again
The United States and Iran had just announced the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, but a spokesman for the Iranian Armed Forces headquarters reversed this on Saturday, according to Fars news agency. It was said that Iran was taking military action against ships. He cited the ongoing US blockade of Iranian ports as the reason.
According to the ship data service MarineTraffic, the cruise ship “Celestial Discovery” – the former “Aida aura” – was the first to transit the Strait of Hormuz on Friday since the start of the Iran war at the end of February. Several cruise ships were stranded in various ports, among other things, after the USA and Israel launched attacks from Iran in late February and Iran threatened to fire on ships in the strait.
The “MSC Euribia” was stuck in Dubai, “Mein Schiff 4” in Abu Dhabi and the “Mein Schiff 5” in Doha. After the passengers were evacuated, small crews remained on board. Germany’s largest cruise operator Aida Cruises has no ships in the Gulf region. The shipping company decided last summer not to offer trips in the region due to the situation.
