There are not only blunders and big challenges lurking when it comes to choosing a gift – even when it comes to the music at the party or in private, the choice needs to be made carefully. Sure, some couples know their partner’s favorite songs very well and know which levers to pull. But sometimes things are not so easy and it takes a bit of inspiration.

Birthday songs for children (and teenagers)

Parents often feel sad when their children grow up. Only yesterday the son or daughter was just that little innocent child to be protected, and a moment later the offspring go out to grow up. Great musicians like Neil Young, Rod Stewart and Cat Stevens (now Yusuf Islam) are no strangers to these feelings either. Ben Folds and Stevie Wonder, for example, wrote the songs dedicated to their children before this time. All of them are excellent as birthday songs, that much is clear. A selection of the best songs from parents to their children:

  • Neil Sedaka – Happy birthday sweet sixteen
  • Rod StewartForever young
  • John Lennon – Beautiful boy
  • Stevie Wonder – Isn’t she lovely?
  • Talking Heads – Stay up late
  • Neil Young – Here for you
  • Cat Stevens-Father and son
  • Ben Folds-Gracie

The alternative birthday songs

It doesn’t always have to be the usual suspects. Even artists who you would not have thought capable of have taken up the theme of birthday songs in their discography. Jimi Hendrix wishes himself a happy birthday in his version of “Happy Birthday”, Tiny Moving Parts turn every birthday into an emo-math-rock party and Björk recalls her past with The Sugarcubes in “Birthday”.
