A previously anonymous track on vinyl is currently circulating for free in record stores. What’s behind it?
Music fans are currently faced with an unusual mystery: a so-called “mystery vinyl” has appeared in several record stores in Great Britain and the USA, which apparently comes from a previously unnamed major act.
Shops like Rough Trade recently received shipments of the anonymous records. There is no indication of artist or title on either the cover or the vinyl itself. The records are in simple white sleeves – completely without any printing.
Free issue and targeted secrecy
Particularly unusual: The vinyls were given to customers free of charge. According to reports from the stores, it is a kind of sneak preview of an upcoming song by a “major artist” that will be officially released in the near future.
The strategy appears deliberately mysterious – a marketing approach that has become rare in times of digital releases and accordingly attracts attention.
Alienated voice makes identification difficult
Anyone who has already played the record describes the song as an emotional piano ballad. What is particularly striking is the singing: the voice was audibly pitched downwards, apparently to disguise the identity of the act.
Lyrically, the piece is about a relationship that is breaking down. Lines like “Don’t give up on us” lead to an emotional chorus in which “Stay low” can be heard repeatedly.
Speculation: Which acts are eligible?
Speculation is now running rampant on social networks. The most frequently mentioned names include Lewis Capaldi, The 1975, Bon Iver and Niall Horan.
Whether one of these acts is actually behind the mysterious release remains unconfirmed. However, one thing is clear: the unusual campaign has achieved its goal – the unknown track is sure to attract the attention of the music world.
