Angela de Jong decided, ‘coincidentally’ when RTL was bought by her employer DPG, to stop as a TV columnist. Her market value has plummeted since then. “One of many.”
It seems orchestrated: just when RTL Netherlands was acquired by the Flemish media giant DPG Media, Angela de Jong decided to stop as a TV columnist. The Algemeen Dagblad is now a sister company of RTL, so all those critical pieces from Angela suddenly had a very uncomfortable aftertaste.
One of many
For market value Angela has it move however, it turned out disastrously. Bert van der Veer, former channel boss of RTL 4, misses her contributions about the TV world. “Dear Angela, I miss you, we miss you,” he wrote Instagram.
The former TV boss continues: “Of course, we understand that after about seven years of television you switched to current affairs. But, if I’m honest (your catchline), you were unique as a reviewer and you are now one of many.”
Morning mood
Angela had better start writing about TV again, says Bert. “How many times have you managed to spoil John de Mol’s morning mood? Or have you joined the talk shows? Now I don’t see you anywhere anymore.”
It is a shame that Angela’s voice has completely disappeared from the media debate, he thinks. “We have to make do with ratings fetishist Tina Nijkamp and the already flickering fire of Victor Vlam.
Regret?
Will Angela herself feel sorry? Maybe she can find a middle ground, says Bert. “Isn’t there something you can think of, Angela? World suffering once a week and then TV three or four times a week, but short pieces? Or a weekly overview?”
“I have to look for you on the AD website, you no longer fall under ‘show’. Well, I just had to say it. For us TV people, life has become a lot more boring…”
