Masked men tried to attack the bus of the Ghanaian first division club Berekum Chelsea FC – with fatal results.

20-year-old professional footballer Dominic Frimpong has died after an armed attack on the team bus of his club Berekum Chelsea FC. The Ghanaian first division team was returning from an away game when masked men attacked the vehicle with firearms. Frimpong succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

The attack occurred in the southern region of Ashanti. A club statement said: “Masked men shot at the team bus with pistols and assault rifles.” The players then fled into the bushes. Ghanaian police confirmed Frimpong’s death on Monday.

The Ghana Football Association described the incident as “tragic” and a “huge loss not only for Berekum Chelsea but also for Ghana football as a whole”, according to SID. He also announced that he would review the safety precautions for away trips. Berekum Chelsea are third from bottom in the Ghana Premier League.
