Special award ceremony by FC St. Pauli: The Hamburg club calls it a conscious alternative to the FIFA honor of the US President. The first prize winner runs a bar in Minnesota.
The FC St Pauli has launched a “Peace Prize” in the USA, among other things as a response to US President Donald Trump. The first prize winner is the operator of the bar “Black Hart of St. Paul” in the US state of Minnesota. The restaurant serves as a meeting place for football fans and as an inclusive space for the queer community, according to a club statement.
FIFA provided the reason for FC St. Pauli’s Peace Prize: In December, the world association awarded US President Donald Trump with a “Peace Prize” at the World Cup draw. This is “a step that has appropriated football for political symbolism,” says the club’s statement. The company’s own price is “a conscious alternative” to this. “The focus is not on power figures, but on people who take responsibility in everyday life and concretely strengthen democratic participation.”

The club wants to use the prize to honor people and initiatives that promote solidarity and participation, the statement continued. The club’s management says it complains about developments in the USA “in which authoritarian tendencies and targeted restrictions on rights and freedoms can be observed.” In addition to the award ceremony, the club has launched a new Instagram channel for the USA.
