TEHRAN (dpa-AFX) – There was an earthquake off the coasts of Iran and Azerbaijan. According to the USGS earthquake monitoring station, the quake had a magnitude of 5.6 and occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The Iranian state agency Irna reported that the earthquake was felt in several rural regions in the border area. Accordingly, rescue teams from the Red Crescent Society were sent to the affected areas to help. There were initially no reports of casualties or damage in Iran or neighboring Azerbaijan.

The earthquake hit Iran on the day a ceasefire was announced after around five weeks of war. The population and rescuers are exhausted by the attacks by the USA and Israel. A severe earthquake is likely to have dramatic consequences for the region.

There are frequent severe earthquakes in the region where the Arabian, Indian and Eurasian plates meet. At the beginning of autumn 2025 there was an earthquake in Afghanistan with more than 2,000 deaths./arb/DP/stw
