Magnus Saugstrup Magdeburg celebrates

As of: April 5, 2026 • 8:58 p.m

SC Magdeburg has taken another important step towards the championship. After a great show of strength, Bennet Wiegert’s team triumphed with 27:23 (13:14) at Frisch Auf Göppingen.

It was the expected difficult away game for SC Magdeburg. The hosts defended strongly from the start and were very efficient in attack. Göppingen keeper Kristian Sæverås in particular was the guarantee for a top performance for the ninth-place team with seven saves in the first 30 minutes.

In the 14th minute, Franko Lastro scored for the first time to give the home team a two-goal lead (6:4). On the SCM side, it was mainly Lukas Mertens who scored his goals from outside and kept his team in the game with seven goals in the first 30 minutes. Göppingen went into halftime with the score at 14:13.

The hosts remained toxic in the second half and made life difficult for Magdeburg. As the playing time went on, SCM keeper Sergey Hernández Ferrer got better and better into the game and increased his save rate to a strong 36% by the end.

Iceland duo turns up the heat

In crunch time, Bennet Wiegert was once again able to rely on Gisli Thorgeir Kristjansson and Omar Ingi Magnusson. The two Icelanders got better and better and moved the game to the visitors’ side. Matthias Musche converted all of the resulting seven-meter throws safely. The SCM’s best shooter was Lukas Mertens with nine goals, while Erik Persson scored the most frequently at Göppingen (five goals).
