Willy and René van de Kerkhof are overjoyed with PSV’s championship and have no problem with their own record being broken. The PSV icons were the earliest champions ever, but they happily transfer this record to the current team. They said this on Sunday in the Omroep Brabant radio program Van Brabantse Bodem.
The brothers toast the championship together on Sunday. Willy with champagne, René sticks to a cup of coffee. The football brothers set a nice record with PSV on April 8, 1978: they became champions in a home match against FC Twente, making them the earliest champions ever in the Eredivisie.
That record was broken today, but the two are certainly not sad about that. “It’s great that our record has now been set three days later. Great,” says Willy. “We are a close second now.”
They love that PSV is champion for the 27th time. “On to thirty,” says Willy. According to René, the championship is more than deserved. “When you play so well… In recent weeks it has been a bit less, but otherwise at its best. They have delivered a top performance.”
Watching Feyenoord
After PSV won the match against FC Utrecht on Saturday, the brothers naturally sat in front of the television today to follow number two Feyenoord. Because the Rotterdam team drew against FC Volendam, PSV became champions this afternoon.
“The football of Feyenoord and Ajax is really mediocre,” says René. “I have never experienced the distance between those two and PSV in my life. Things are not going well at Ajax, and unfortunately Feyenoord does not have the quality to be second.”
He expects that Feyenoord will still have some problems with NEC, which is now only one point behind the club from Rotterdam. “PSV has also played bad matches, but when you see Feyenoord’s efforts you think: boys, come on man. You are all professionals.”
Let’s be honest: that’s not really something to worry about today, because right now it’s time for René and Willy to enjoy themselves. “I’m going to have a party with friends,” says Willy. René is waiting for the ceremony. “I’m going to the cinema soon.”
