“I sent them a message via WhatsApp and a photo of the fire,” neighbor Rob tells NH this morning at the burned down house on Stationsweg. Five minutes later they spoke on the phone and Rob was able to explain the seriousness of the situation. “Of course he was terribly shocked by that.”
Renovating for four years
According to local residents, the owners had been renovating the farmhouse for about four years. Last year a new thatched roof was installed, says Rob.
An hour and a half after the fire broke out, virtually nothing was left of that roof. “I was watching with tears in my eyes.”
NL-Alert and surrounding area evacuated
The fire broke out around half past seven and grabbed around very quickly. The thatched roof and strong wind allowed the fire to spread quickly. Due to the smoke and the risk of flying fire, an NL Alert was sent and several homes in the area were evacuated. “I didn’t get anything at all,” says a woman who lives a street away. “Miraculous. Or I’ll go deaf.”
