Telekom Baskets Bonn recorded their second win in a row in the Bundesliga.
After an exciting and hard-fought final phase, the Bonn team won 76:75 (30:42) against the Niners Chemnitz on Saturday evening.
This means the Baskets are heading further towards direct playoff qualification. The Rhinelanders improved to third place in the BBL table, at least temporarily, but their neighbors Bamberg are still in action on Easter Monday.
In front of 4,600 fans in Chemnitz, the first quarter was even. In the second quarter, Bonn’s offense didn’t get off to a good start, so the Saxons were able to pull ahead 42:30.
Bonn’s comeback in the second half
After the half-time break, Bonn gradually fought back – ten minutes before the end the deficit was only five points.
Just over seven minutes before the end, Bonn’s Jeff Garrett Jr. reduced the deficit to one point with a converted three-point throw. Just under six minutes before the end, builder Grayson Murphy scored to make it 61:60 for Bonn, who were in the lead again for the first time since the opening minutes.
Shortly afterwards, Garrett Jr. increased the lead with a layup (45th), before Chemnitz’s Nike Sibande converted two three-point throws in a row, so that Chemnitz was ahead 66:63.
The lead changed several times in the exciting final phase. 50 seconds before the end, Bonn’s Joel Aminu equalized with a successful “three-pointer” to make it 73:73.
Kevin Yebo scored after a powerful move to the basket to make it 75:73 for Chemnitz and was fouled – but Yebo missed the free throw. Chemnitz remained in possession of the ball, but was no longer able to score. Instead, Bonn’s Grayson Murphy converted a three-point shot with less than four seconds left, giving the guests a 76:75 lead.
Chemnitz had another shot, but the attempt from beyond the three-point line didn’t fall through the net, so the Bonn team were able to celebrate a narrow away win.
The most successful point collector on the field was Corey Davis from Chemnitz with 21 points, while Garrett Jr. and Jalen Finch each contributed 16 points for Bonn.
