Only against Newcastle was there a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the round of 16 of the Champions League. Like Atlético, the Catalans are in the quarter-finals of the premier class. Most recently, Barcelona won impressively 7-2 in the second leg against the English. In the domestic league too, FCB had a narrow 1-0 win against Rayo Vallecano before the international break.

Atlético Madrid have only lost three of their last ten games, but head coach Diego Simeone’s team has been waiting for a win in two games. The Madrilenians are in fourth place in La Liga with 57 points and are almost certain of a place in the Champions League for the coming season. In fifth place they are 13 points ahead. Things are also going well for Atlético internationally. They are in the quarter-finals of the Champions League after a 5-2 win in the first leg and a 2-3 defeat in the second leg against Tottenham Hotspur. Most recently in the domestic league before the international break there was a narrow 2-3 defeat in the city derby against Real Madrid.
