According to Les Engagés 25 million euros per month, according to PVDA 94 million euros per month: no one seems to know exactly how much the Belgian state earns from rising energy prices through extra VAT revenue. And that is a problem, now that politicians from left to right are calling for “that extra money” to flow back to the population. That is why we investigated how much the treasury actually earns from the more expensive energy bill. And guess what? Our country is not getting richer at all, in fact: “The state is losing billions in tax revenue,” says economist Gert Peersman.
