The unplanned break from racing opens up unimagined opportunities for the Formula 1 stars. RacingBulls driver Liam Lawson could use one of them and compete in another racing series in April. However, this plan still has a catch.
The Formula 1 drivers don’t have much to do at the moment. Due to the race cancellations in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, they are free until the first weekend in May, with the exception of the usual PR appointments. Liam Lawson could take advantage of the opportunity and compete in the so-called Supercars Championship, a racing series based in Australia and New Zealand.
A Lawson start would be ideal in terms of timing because the series will be at the Euromarque Motorsport Park in Christchurch from April 17th to 19th. As a New Zealand native and Formula 1 driver, Lawson would be a real star guest who would bring a completely different level of attention to the race weekend.
Start of Formula 1 star as a PR boost
Australian motorsport journalist James Phelps revealed to “Fox Sports” that Lawson’s start is already being prepared. According to the insider, intensive consideration is currently being given to how the Formula 1 star could be given a wildcard for the race. “I can tell you it’s serious,” he reiterated.
The only, but definitely big, catch: There is currently no free seat behind the wheel for Lawson. The teams’ cockpits are occupied. “They asked the teams if there was a driver who would give Lawson his spot for the weekend,” Phelps explained.
As unlikely as this may sound at first, the desire of the racing series and the organizers to put this plan into action is great. “If they got him, it would be huge for the sport, it would become a global issue,” Phelps is convinced.
According to the insider, it is clear that no team that is at the top of the championship will free up a place. Things look different for the teams in midfield or at the end of the field. Thanks to Lawson, they would make headlines far beyond the continental border. A perspective that is extremely attractive not only for the sponsors.
